Yes. In the ACT, all dogs over the age of six months must be desexed. We understand there are some exemptions to this rule, however, ACT Barks and Recreation is unable to care for dogs that are not desexed.
Yes, all dogs must be up to date with vaccinations. Owners must supply a current vaccination certificate that indicates their dog’s vaccination history before starting daycare with us.
Yes. All dogs over six months will need to take part in a Daycare Suitability Assessment before they start daycare. We take pride in ensuring we have a safe environment for both our dogs and our staff. During this session, our staff will assess your dog to make sure daycare is a good fit for them.
If we find that daycare is not a good fit for your dog, please don’t take it personally. We want all dogs to be in a positive, safe, and fun environment where they can play happily with each other.
Puppies aged 3-6 months do not require an assessment to before attending Puppy Play School.
ACT Barks and Recreation is all about providing your dog with a safe and stress-free environment to socialise, explore and be enriched. Our daily program includes a morning walk, naptime and enrichment or training activities as well as plenty of time to just be a dog.
Yes. Puppies aged between 3-6 months, and under 12kg, are welcome at Puppy Play School. As part of each four week program, we will discuss how your puppy is adapting to daycare. If daycare is a good fit for them and they continue to meet our requirements, we will invite your pup to join our regular Doggy Daycare services.
They are most welcome to join the fun! We find that our smaller groups and calm environment has been beneficial to older or anxious pups that may have become overwhelmed in similar situations in the past. Our Daycare Suitability Assessment will help us determine if daycare is a good fit or your senior dog.
Yes, we only cater to extra small to medium sized dogs (under 12 kilograms).
Examples of the types of breeds we work with are:
· Maltese, Yorkies, Westies, Pomeranians, Bichon Frise,
· Pugs, small Oodles, Shih Tzu, Dachshunds, Brussel Griffin, Frenchies
· Beagle, King Charles Cavalier, Cocker Spaniels, Corgi
Your pup must wear a collar or harness with their name on it. They must also be on a lead during drop off and pick up.
Other items you may bring include:
· Medications that need to be administered during the day - clearly labelled and with instructions
· A warm coat for those chilly days
· For dogs with special diets, you may wish to specific treats they can eat.
We have a storage area where your dog’s items can be kept during the day.
While most dogs eat before or after coming to daycare, we can serve meals provided by you throughout the day. Food needs to be measured out by you and clearly labelled.
We provide dogs and puppies with high quality treats throughout the day.
Our staff will supervise your dog from drop off to pick up. They will continually monitor dogs throughout the day to ensure all dogs are safe and well-behaved. We proactively disrupt any over-excited play and do not lead any activities that contribute to resource guarding or other unwanted behaviours.
Rest assured that your pup will be safe and having the time of their life with us!
· Drop off – 8:00am to 9:30am
· Drop off/pick up for half days – 12:00-1:00pm
· Pick up – 4:00pm to 5:30pm
We value the work-life balance of our staff and would like them to be able to finish work on time each day. As such, a late fee will apply to all owners collecting their pet after 5:30pm.
A late fee of $15 per each 15 minute block will apply. By using our services, you agree to respect the personal time of our staff and to paying these charges.
We ask that any cancellations are requested more than 24 hours before your booking. This allows us to offer the place to another dog on our waiting list. Payments may be refunded or used as credit for a future booking.
Cancellations (or no shows) with less than 24 hours’ notice will be charged the full rate for your booking.
We do not offer formal dog training at this time. However, each afternoon we will work one-on-one with your pup to practice their basic manners such as recall and sit, or encourage good behaviour through fun games. By using rewards-based reinforcement methods, we get the best out of your dog!
Our pup parents will be invited to join our private Facebook group to access updates throughout the day. We may also post pictures or videos to our Instagram and public Facebook accounts (@actbarksandrec). We will also give you a rundown of your dog’s day, who they played with and what they got up to when you come to pick them up.
